FAQS

AGENTS & QUERIES

Publishing houses don’t accept unsolicited manuscripts from new writers, unless represented by a literary agent. By working with a reputable agent, you will not only have expert advice and support, you have a much better chance at having your manuscript or book published.

A query is when you contact literary agents to see if they’re interested in your book idea

First, you research an agent that is looking for your narrative and genre. Then you query that agent by sending an email with a cover letter, synopsis & first three chapters of your book (some ask for a book proposal as well).

Each agent has different requirements and interests, when querying, make sure you read their submission guidelines.

Thousands! That’s why it’s important to make your query stand out.

A cover letter introduces your book and who you are, and it must be compelling and attention-grabbing from the start. Keep it short, but also bear in mind that many agents won’t look further than the cover letter if there are typos, spelling or grammar mistakes or long, chunky paragraphs.

In the synopsis, you tell the storyline of your book within just a few paragraphs. To go from start to finish, but briefly, can be a difficult task but it is important for an agent to understand the book without reading the whole manuscript.

Within the first three chapters, you are setting the stage so the agent understands your writing style. The agent will be looking for your tone of voice, and if you are able to introduce characters, open the book with a hook, and compel audiences to continue reading, Often writers want to submit a different chapter that has more action but it doesn’t make chronological sense for the agent.
